SUMMARY:Archeology in the Land of the Bible
DESCRIPTION:Join biblical scholar and archaeologist Nate Ramsayer as he leads audience members on a brief tour of the ancient Biblical lands. \nWhat is it like to be an archaeologist? In what ways can we get information about people who lived in the past? How are objects and ruins excavated? \nArchaeologists have been digging in Israel/Palestine and the surrounding areas for over 200 years\, producing all kinds of fascinating remains from the past. Nate will discuss how sites are identified and excavated and the methods of dating archaeologists use. \nDoors open at 6:45 for visitors to tour the museum.  A brief business meeting at 7:15 is followed by the talk at 7:30.  Free and open to the public. \nAbout the Speaker: \nNate Ramsayer is a freelance biblical studies instructor. He holds an M.A. degree in Hebrew Bible and the ancient Near East from Brandeis University. He is also an active archaeologist who has excavated at seven sites around the world\, focusing mainly in Israel during the Bronze and Iron Ages. Nate’s scholarly research interests include: biblical composition and manuscript history\, ancient Near Eastern myths\, and exploring points at which the archaeological record confirms or is at tension with the narrative found in the Bible. He has also worked extensively in the field of the Dead Sea Scrolls\, presenting papers\, giving lectures\, working with museum exhibits\, and even researching at the Qumran caves where the scrolls were found.   \n  \n

SUMMARY:When Church was the State
DESCRIPTION:Local author Ben Jacques will speak on the history of the First Church in Stoneham – a congregation that has existed since the 1720s\, playing a key role in the history of Stoneham\, from the founding through the revolutionary war\, the fight for abolition and well into the 20th century.  This is part of our special efforts to celebrate Stoneham’s 300th year as a separate town. \nAny town in colonial Massachusetts required a school and school master\, a burying ground and a church and minister – – that church is First Church Congregational\, now located on Main Street.  Until 1826\, the meeting house served as both Town Hall and Church and the church was an essential piece of town government and Stoneham’s history in the last 300 years. \nAs always\, doors open for evening meetings at 6:45 pm for time to view the exhibits\, with a short business meeting at 7:15 and the speaker at 7:30. \n \n

SUMMARY:Lament for the Christmas Tree Shops - With Anthony Sammarco
DESCRIPTION:This is the rescheduled event from November 2024.\nDidn’t You Just Love a Bargain?\n\n\nA Lament for the Christmas Tree Shops\n\n\nJoin us as the Stoneham Historical Society & Museum welcomes back noted Boston historian Anthony Sammarco\, speaking on his latest book .”The Christmas Tree Shops: Don’t You Just Love a Bargain?”  He creates a  fascinating glimpse into this once iconic store that we all shopped at. The Christmas Tree Shops were an icon of Massachusetts\, with 23 stores that boasted a diverse assortment of merchandise from seasonal decorations\, home decor\, housewares\, food and giftware and just about everything else.  Their unique style left many shoppers saddened when the chain closed in 2023 after bankruptcy. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker:\n\n\nAnthony Mitchell Sammarco is a noted historian and author of over sixty books on the history and development of Boston\, and he lectures widely on the history and development of his native city. He commenced writing in 1995\, and his books Lost Boston\, The History of Howard Johnson’s: How A Massachusetts Soda Fountain Became a Roadside Icon\, and The Baker Chocolate Company: A Sweet History are among his many books that have made the bestsellers list. \nMr. Sammarco is employed by Boston-based Payne/Bouchier\, Inc. and since 1997 he has taught history at the Urban College of Boston\, where he was named educator of the year and where he serves on the Leadership Council.
