DESCRIPTION:How do you create a city of 75\,000 people – in secret? \naerial view of K-25\, one of three uranium-enrichment facilities in Oak Ridge\, 1945.US DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY/ED WESCOTT\nOur November presentation will cover the selection\, development and operation of Oak Ridge\, TN\, a secret city created in support of the Manhattan Project where uranium was enriched to supply fissionable material for the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima on August 6\, 1945. \nThere were only 3000 people in the area when the US government bought over 100 square miles – 64\,000 acres – of land in 1942. Planned for 15\,000 people\, Oak Ridge grew to 75\,000 by the end of the Second World War\, and most of them had no idea why they were really there – thanks to carefully compartmentalized work. \nWhat really went on in the secret city of Oak Ridge during World War II? Find out in this fascinating talk by retired Army officer David LaCroix. \nDoors open at 6:45 pm.  There is a brief meeting at 7:15\, followed by the talk.   Free and open to the public. \nThe featured photo shows the Calutron Girls who separated uranium at Y-12 building in Oak Ridge without knowing what they were working on. (US Dept. of Energy Photo) \nOak Ridge remains a center of scientific research and nuclear production today. \n  \nAbout the Speaker \nDavid LaCroix is a member of the Stoneham Historical Society and former Stoneham resident.  He graduated from Stoneham High School in 1975 and earned a B.S. (Management & Economics) from Worcester State College in 1979 and a J.D. from Suffolk University Law School in 1982.  David was commissioned as a Judge Advocate in the U.S. Army where he served for 26 years (active and reserve) and retired as a Colonel.  David also served as a civilian attorney for the Departments of the Navy\, Defense\, and Interior where he retired after 32 years of service.  He and his wife reside in Gettysburg\, PA where he is a volunteer for the Gettysburg Foundation\, a not-for-profit organization that partners with the U. S. National Park Service to sustain the Gettysburg National Military Park. He gave a 2025 presentation on Gettysburg at SHSM. \n  \nAtomic Cloud of Hiroshima\, Japan August 6 1945. At the time this photo was made\, smoke billowed 20\,000 feet above Hiroshima while smoke from the burst of the first atomic bomb had spread over 10\,000 feet at the base of the rising column.\n\n  \n

Cairo Museum via Wikimedia Commons\nIn 1922 one of the greatest archaeological discoveries of all time took place—the finding of King Tut’s tomb. Why was this such a noteworthy find? Where are the thousands of objects he was buried with found today? \nWho was King Tut\, and why is he the most famous pharaoh of all time? \nJoin biblical scholar and archaeologist Nate Ramsayer in the footsteps of the great Egyptologists. We’ll investigate exciting pyramids\, mummies\, and hieroglyphs on this tour of the region known as “the gift of the Nile”—the fascinating land of Egypt. \nDoors open at 6:45 for visitors to tour the museum.  A brief business meeting at 7:15 is followed by the talk at 7:30.  Free and open to the public. \nAbout the Speaker: \nNate Ramsayer is a freelance biblical studies instructor. He holds an M.A. degree in Hebrew Bible and the ancient Near East from Brandeis University. He is also an active archaeologist who has excavated at seven sites around the world\, focusing mainly in Israel during the Bronze and Iron Ages. Nate’s scholarly research interests include: biblical composition and manuscript history\, ancient Near Eastern myths\, and exploring points at which the archaeological record confirms or is at tension with the narrative found in the Bible. He has also worked extensively in the field of the Dead Sea Scrolls\, presenting papers\, giving lectures\, working with museum exhibits\, and even researching at the Qumran caves where the scrolls were found.   \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:  \nHow Ford Motor Co. cheated Shawmut Motor Co. from Stoneham in an epic cross-country race\nIn 1909\, America was home to 253 automakers\, a landscape of visionaries\, schemers\, and would-be barons of the new century. But when playboy millionaire M. Robert Guggenheim announced an audacious coast-to-coast auto race from New York City to the Seattle World’s Fair\, only three of those companies were brassy enough to show up at the starting line: Acme\, Ford\, and Shawmut – the latter built in a tiny factory in Stoneham\, Mass. \nFord was looking to make a name for its tiny affordable runabout – the Model T\, while Shawmut was struggling to survive after a devasting factory fire in 1908. \nThe race would take weeks on a brutal 4\,106-mile course of mountain ranges\, mud bogs\, washed-out wagon bridges\, and harrowing canyon trails\, long before the era of asphalt highways\, seatbelts\, and service stations. \nBut Henry Ford was intent on proving that the Model T could go the distance and beat out the muscular luxury cars—and he didn’t plan to leave it to chance. Indeed\, a little over three weeks after the race began\, a Ford crossed the line hours ahead of the Shawmut. \nExcept that victory was a fraud. \nAuthor Eric Moskowitz will illuminate the harrowing adventure\, including the dirty tricks and downright sabotage that meant the Shawmut Motors crew from Stoneham – drivers T. Arthur Pettengill\, Robert Messer\, and mechanic Earle Chapin – were robbed of their moment in the spotlight as the true winners of the race. \nRace route\n  \nAttendees can visit the SHSM exhibit on Shawmut Motor Company\, including a Shawmut headlight that made the epic cross-country journey. \nDoors open at 6:45 pm.  There is a brief meeting at 7:15\, followed by the talk.   Free and open to the public. \nCopies of the book The Longest\, Hardest Race will be be on sale\, and can be autographed by the author. \nAbout the Speaker:\nEric Moskowitz spent 12 years as a reporter at The Boston Globe\, where he won the National Headliner Award for feature writing\, shared in the Pulitzer Prize for coverage of the Boston Marathon bombing and its aftermath\, and was one of the lead reporters on “The Valedictorians Project\,” a Pulitzer finalist examining obstacles to college and career success for the top graduates of many of Boston’s public high schools. Among other beats\, he spent three years covering transportation\, and he started as a suburban reporter in the old Globe NorthWest bureau\, where his coverage of a Stoneham budget crisis in 2007 led him indirectly to the overlooked history of the Shawmut Motor Company — and many years later\, to his first book. He has written for The Atlantic and The New York Times\, and his stories have been featured in The Best American Sports Writing and The Best American Newspaper Narratives anthologies. This will be fun for the whole family. \nReading of the Declaration of Independence at Noon from the Gazebo\, followed by a patriotic singalong. \n \n  \nMake your own tri-corner hat\, practice writing with a quill pen\, play “throw the tea in the Harbor\,”  learn militia drum commands\, and watch period demos such as spinning or candle-making.  Pose with our giant 4 foot feather pen as you pretend to sign your “John Hancock” to America’s founding document\, see the traveling “Tiny 1o-footer” shoe house\, and much more. \nWe have 250th souvenir copies of the Declaration for the first 250 people. \nJointly sponsored by the Stoneham Historical Society & Museum and the Stoneham Historical Commission.

SUMMARY:Walls\, Rock & Rum - A Landscape Transformed
DESCRIPTION:Transforming the Colonial Landscape\n The Middlesex Fells holds more than scenic trails. Beneath its canopy lies the story of the Pawtucket peoples\, Puritan ambition\, and a landscape transformed by early colonial industry. \nCharlestown\, first capital of the Massachusetts Bay Colony\, was once over 78 square miles – encompassing what is now the Middlesex Fells Reservation and Stoneham\, Malden\, Melrose and other communities in the Mystic River watershed. The Puritans of the Massachusetts Bay Colony rapidly transformed the area — long home to the Pawtucket and Massachusett peoples — from an indigenous landscape into a land that mirrored English society. \nAuthors Alison Simcox and Douglas Heath will talk about the ways early colonists privatized land and\, in Stoneham and the Fells\, marked woodlots with stone walls\, giving the largest lots to wealthy men. Timber and quarried stone from the Fells were used to build homes\, ships\, and walls and to fuel brickmaking and rum distilling. Today the Fells is preserved\, but beyond its trails and wooded vistas lie deeper stories of Indigenous communities and colonial transformation. \nJune 11\, 2026 starting at 7:15 pm. Doors open at 6:45 to view the museum.  A brief business meeting will be followed by the talk.  Free and open to the public. (donations welcomed). \nAbout the Speakers\nAlison Simcox is an Environmental Scientist and Writer. She recently retired from the US EPA as a specialist in air quality. In 1998\, she was the second woman to receive a doctorate in Engineering from Tufts University. She is on the Board of Directors of the Saugus River Watershed Council and co-leads history walks for the Friends of the Middlesex Fells. \nDouglas Heath is an Environmental Scientist and History Researcher. A US Navy veteran\, he worked at the US Geological Survey and US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for 30 years protecting drinking water supplies in New England. He is a Certified Interpretive Guide.\nHe leads history walks for the Friends of Middlesex Fells. He is also Vice President of the Saugus River Watershed Council. \nAlison and Doug have written six books: Lake Quannapowitt; Breakheart Reservation; Middlesex Fells; The Lost Mill Village of Middlesex Fells; Murder at Breakheart Hill Farm; and Walls\, Rock\, & Rum. The sixth book will be published by The History Press in May 2026. The Lost Mill Village won the 2018 Preservation Award from the New England Chapter of the Victorian Society in America. In 2022\, Alison and Doug received the Gertrude Spaulding Award for their work protecting Lake Quannapowitt and for their book of the same name. They have also written trail guides for the Virginia Wood and Bellevue Pond areas of the Fells. \nSigned copies of their books will be available for sale after the presentation. \nImage is the Construction of the ship Pilgrim\, the last ship built in Medford as remembered by Fred H. C. Woolley.  Gift to the Medford Historical Society from his niece Helen Packard.
