SUMMARY:The Magical Flying Santas
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a talk on the The Magical Flying Santas: The story behind Christmas deliveries to New England Lighthouse families. \nFree and open to the public. \nDoors open at 6:45.  There is a short business meeting at 7:15\, followed by the program at 7:30 pm. \nNew England’s Flying Santas\nDuring the Great Depression\, aviator Capt. William “Bill” Wincapaw began the tradition of “The Flying Santa.” Born in Friendship\, Maine\, Wincapaw oversaw flight operations for the Curtiss Flying Service in Rockland\, Maine. He came to admire Maine’s lighthouse keepers and their families for standing the watch in isolated and often inhospitable locations. \nTo show his appreciation for their dedication and self-sacrifice\, Wincapaw decided to deliver gift parcels to local lighthouses on Christmas Day. Early in the morning on Dec. 25\, 1929\, Wincapaw loaded packages of Christmas gifts into his vintage Travel Air A-6000-A airplane\, which featured a single radial engine and wicker seats. That first year\, he airdropped Christmas gifts to a dozen lighthouses along Maine’s coast. \nWincapaw continued the tradition the following year. Over time\, he came to be known as the “Flying Santa” and the “Santa of the Lighthouses.” He began to dress the part and enlisted his son\, Bill Jr.\, to pilot additional Christmas Day flights. His gift parcels included basic items such as newspapers\, magazines\, coffee\, tea\, candy\, tobacco\, soup\, yarn\, pens\, and pencils. By 1933\, the program proved so popular that Wincapaw expanded it to include 91 lighthouses from Maine to Rhode Island and Connecticut. He even found commercial sponsors to underwrite the cost of the parcels and the flights. \nSanta flights continue to this day.

SUMMARY:"I dissent": Sheryl Faye as Ruth Bader Ginsburg
DESCRIPTION:Living history performance – Sheryl Faye as Ruth Bader Ginsburg – “I Dissent“ \nDoors open at 6:45 pm to view exhibits.  There is a brief meeting at 7:15 followed by the program. \nRuth Bader Ginsburg – “I Dissent”\n\n\n\nRuth Bader Ginsburg was an American lawyer and jurist who served as an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1993 until her death in September 2020. She was the second woman and the first Jewish woman ever appointed to the Court and became the longest-serving Jewish Justice. \nShe championed fairness and equality and objected to different expectations for men and women\, prejudice against minority groups in places like hotels and restaurants\, and women having fewer job opportunities than men. Ruth served on the national board of the ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union)  and launched The Women’s Rights Project\, she continued to be a leading voice for gender equality\, women’s interests\, and civil rights and liberties. \nRuth Bader Ginsburg’s life continues to be one of achievement: as a lawyer\, professor of law\, a judge\, and then a Supreme Court justice\, she stands out because she was not afraid to dissent\, disapprove\, and disagree with conditions of unfairness and inequality. This show is the inspiring story of how she changed her life—and ours. \n“Fight for the things that you care about\, but do it in a way that will lead others to join you.” ~ Ruth Bader Ginsburg \nThe show is free: donations encouraged.  It will be 50 minutes plus questions and starts at approximately 7:30 pm. \n  \nSince 2003\, Sheryl Faye has masterfully brought to life important historical women to both children and adults across the U.S. In her one-woman shows\, she immerses the audience in a multimedia learning experience that captivates viewers and sparks their interest to explore more.

SUMMARY:New England Kitchens at May Joint Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Date/Time\nDate(s) – Thu: May 11\, 2023\n7:00 pm \nFrom the colonial period to the present\, the kitchen has been a source of nourishment and comfort. The way Americans have lived with their kitchens has changed dramatically over the course of three centuries. Join us to hear Historic New England curator Nancy Carlisle discuss how the American kitchen evolved from the 1600s to the present. Drawing on her book America’s Kitchens\, co-authored with Melinda Narardinov\, Ms. Carlisle will discuss the technological and social changes that have taken place in this room and suggest how these innovations have transformed kitchen work and changed women’s lives. \nWe’ll also have our historic “Grandmother’s Kitchen” exhibit room open. \nAbout the Speaker \nNancy Carlisle recently retired as Senior Curator of Collections at Historic New England where she has worked for more than thirty years. In addition to America’s Kitchens\, she is the author of the award-winning book Cherished Possessions: A New England Legacy.
